Kill the Lights

Written by: AyumiNazu

I continuously tried flicking the light switch up and down. In the end no light came on, the snow storm outside caused a power outrage. Being alone in the dark scared me. I nervously searched for candles and matches to brighten up the room. Since my aunt was the one who took care of the house, I had no idea where they were. I began to panic, wondering how long the power outrage would last, when all of a sudden I heard someone bashing hard on my front door. I almost jumped when I heard the loud noise that broke the dark silence.

I crept over to the door. My hands were shaking from fear when I turned the door knob to check who it was. A large figure fell right on top of me when the wind blew the door open all the way.

“You take so long to open the door,” he whispered, coughing a few times after that.

I rolled him over so that I could get up and close the front door. A large gust of winter blew into the house and cooled the temperature around us to a minus degree. As soon as that was done, I turned around to check on my boyfriend, “Are you ok?”

He shoved a bag in front of me. It was full of candles, matches and instant food. After accepting the ‘gift’ I brought him over to the couch in the living room and poured some lukewarm water for him.

When I started lighting the candles, placing them all around the room, I realized how the small lights looked like twinkling stars in a night sky. They were so pretty~

As I was lighting some more candles, I asked him, “How did you know I needed these?”

There was a pause and he spoke as soon as he finished his sip of the warm water, “I was worried. You didn’t even turn on your cell phone.”

He started coughing again and that got me worrying. It seemed like he would always be the one to save me from my troubles, but I could never do much for him in return. Since his jacket was wet and covered in icy snow, I helped him take it off. Right after, I brought blankets from my room to wrap around him. However, even with over three layers of thick sheets, it would still take a while to warm him up. Walking in the snow all the way to my house must have been tough.

From the window I could see the blowing snow and icicles forming at the top of my window sill.

“Are you still cold? I’ll get more blankets.”

Ryoma pulled me back, “Your hands are colder than mine.”

Before I could resist, he wrapped me in the blankets with him, it felt so warm and yet embarrassing at the same time. The comfort and the feel of our surroundings brightened up the mood. Human produces more heat than a blanket, that’s for sure.

“Ayumi, you make a nice hot water bottle,” he commented, squeezing me tighter.

I stayed quiet, face red like a cherry as he just pulled me closer to his own body to warm himself up. Ryoma put one of his warmed up hands on my cheek and turned my head so that I would be facing him.

“Are you red because you’re still cold? Or is this bothering you?”

He meant if being so close to his body was making me blush. I’m sure he wanted me to pick the second choice so that he could laugh at me about it, teasingly of course. So instead I replied, “It isn’t bothering me.”

     What a fool I was.

     “So you’re still cold?”

He drew his face closer to me. His eyes pierced my heart and his hands were still around my waist so I couldn’t move. Slowly he approached and yet I wasn’t able to do anything to stop his actions. Right when his closed his eyes and our lips were about to meet, the lights turned on. I closed my eyes and then opened them slowly to adjust to the sudden brightness of the room.

I took the chance to escape from Ryoma’s arms and excused myself by saying something like going to get some more blankets even though we already way more than enough. When I started to walk away, he quickly ran to the lights switch and flicked it off, turning the room all dark again.

He placed a hand in my way and then leaned closer to me, driving me against the wall so I couldn’t get away. He smirked, “When did I ever say that I got warm enough so that you can leave me? Besides, you can use a kiss to warm up. You’re cold too, aren’t you?”

He didn’t let me answer. Our warm lips locked and we drowned in the warmth of each other’s passion for each other.
