Hot Mess

Written by: AyumiNazu

It was a lively party at Fuji’s house, everyone from the tennis team was invited to come! As we walked along the long buffet table, everyone stopped to wonder what that red colored dish was. They hesitated to try it, but then Fuji scooped up a spoon full and put it in his mouth, “Hmmm, it’s good, you guys should try it,” he suggested.

Others followed his lead and tried the strange looking dish. As soon as they felt the sauce on their taste buds, they immediately covered their mouth.

“Fuji, what is this?” complained Eiji while trying to fan his mouth.

“Water! I need water!!” shouted Momo running around the kitchen looking for the refreshing pitcher in order to cool his tongue.

Fuji simply put up another one of his twisted smile. Ryoma, while waiting for a glass of water like everyone else, glared over at my direction. Shoot, I think he noticed…

------Earlier Today------

Something spicy, something hot… I was at Ryoma’s house. His mom was teaching me how to make a delicious piquant dish for Fuji’s Party tonight. Since Fuji loved the wasabi sushi at Takashi’s sushi restaurant, I thought he’d enjoy this zesty dish.

“Ayumi-chan, can you dice the vegetables over there?” Mrs. Echizen Rinko asked me.

     “Right away!”

Ryoma was out practicing tennis with his father, or at least took that as an excuse to avoid helping with the cooking.

“I’ll be right back, I have to buy some tomato sauce for this recipe,” Mrs. Echizen took her purse and left the house.

To not waste time, I decided to blend everything else that was on the recipe first. When I was mixing the salsa, I wondered how much hot sauce to put in it. I can’t take spicy things, so I’ve never made anything like this before. When I was pouring the sauce, hoping not to pour too much, Karupin jumped onto the kitchen table and knocked it all over the place!

“Karupin wait!” he had red sauce all over its paws, to make it worst, he continued running around the house, leaving patches of red everywhere!

I was horrified when I saw the mess he caused after finally catching him. It was one hot mess. Even I was covered in hot sauce!

I was somehow able to clean up the mess, scrubbing hard with sponges I found in one of the kitchen drawers. Karupin was the hardest to take care of. Giving him a bath was something I never want to do ever again!

I locked Karupin in Ryoma’s room to prevent him from causing any more trouble before I finished the dish. However, I came to realize that over half the bowl of salsa and spiced vegetables was made up of hot sauce, it was completely red.

At the moment when I was going to dump everything and remake it, Mrs. Echizen came back, “Ayumi, I though we ran out of tomato sauce, why does it look so red?” she asked confused.

“I found some tomato sauce near the back of the cupboards!” I lied, laughing nervously.

I didn’t want her to know that I nearly messed up the entire house, though I did feel bad for not telling the truth. In the end, she never knew, because we never tasted the dish. I, at the least, didn’t want to put that in my mouth.

I ended up taking the dish to the party instead of throwing it away because Mrs. Echizen went through so much to help me wrap it up and all that.

------End Flashback------

All of a sudden, I became a wallflower in the party, avoiding the notice of other people incase they figured out that I was the one to brought the dish. It would be awkward if I left, so I hid in the shadows of an empty hallway. Then someone tapped me on the shoulder. When I turned around, I was swiftly taken into that person’s arms and was pulled in for a kiss.

My eyes opened wide, what was Ryoma trying to do—?

Some sort of liquid leaked form his mouth to mine, it tingled and burned my tongue. I tried to push him back to stop, but his strong muscles wouldn’t let me do so. Our mouths were tainted messily with red from the sauce when he freed me from his lips. I immediately covered my mouth.

“It’s punishment for doing such a prank,” he smirked.

“Ryoma you’re so mean!” I shouted while running as fast as I could to the kitchen for water.

I couldn’t take the spiciness. It burned so much that tears rolled down my cheeks. It was way too hot!
